CASE EXAMPLES
(These are not real patients, but the situations are typical of the types of patients who seek our services)
Mary Doe
Mary is a thirty three year old mother of two suffering from depression. She is also fifty pounds overweight and feels the additional weight negatively influences her depression. Mary has tried a variety of weight loss programs, loses weight initially, but then gains it back. She finds the depression also hinders her ability to stick with any behavioral changes related to a healthy lifestyle. She is looking for a program which addresses both the depression and obesity, as she understands both must be addressed before any long term changes can occur.
John Smith
John is an eighteen year old male suffering from depression. He has attempted traditional “talk therapy” in the past to address depression, and has also taken antidepressants. Neither provided long-term improvements. John found talk therapy to be boring and he quickly lost interest. He has a desire for an active treatment approach in which he can be more physically involved. He does not like the “stuffiness” of traditional mental health treatment and is looking for a program which meets his need for excitement and activity. He also wants help understanding how to exercise effectively and would like to improve his cardiovascular fitness.
Susan Jones
Susan is a sixty year old female who is one hundred fifty pounds overweight. She is a professional in the medical field who has tried a variety of weight loss programs in the past. If there is a diet out there, she has tried it. She initially loses some weight, but then quickly falls back into old behavioral patterns and gains the weight back. She understands the need for a more complete weight loss program which takes into consideration the psychological factors influencing poor eating habits. She likes the idea of a program addressing not only the body, but the mind as well.
Stacy Davis
Stacy is a twenty five year old female suffering from Anorexia. She has recently completed an inpatient treatment program and is looking for an outpatient program to manage her recovery. She wants support in managing her nutrition program, but also wants help in exercising effectively without falling into old patterns of eating restriction. She has learned a lot in inpatient treatment, but wants to continue this progress in an outpatient setting. She is looking for a program with a comprehensive treatment team including mental health, exercise, and nutritional professionals.
Mary Jones
Mary is a fifty year old female suffering from serious anxiety. She feels worried most days, runs thoughts over and over again in her mind, and is having trouble sleeping. She has tried medication to treat anxiety, but finds medicine leaves her sedate and limited in motivation. Mary has exercised in the past and found it helped with anxiety.
However, she consistently “falls out of it” and finds herself falling back into a sedentary lifestyle. She does not understand how this happens and not only wants to reduce anxiety, but wants the behavioral changes to be a long-term experience.
Stephanie Smith
Stephanie is a fifty five year old female with chronic depression. She has suffered from depression since adolescence. She requires medication to treat depressive symptoms, but also is looking for psychological treatment and direction in maintaining an exercise protocol.
