PEAK PERFORMANCE LAB

The Peak Performance Lab at The Scott Center is a new program in our practice that focuses specifically on performance enhancement.  One main purpose of the lab is to aid athletes in the development of enhanced mental skills for improving performance.  We offer a variety of sports and performance psychology interventions designed to improve athletic performance and reduce the mental mistakes that can interfere with meeting potential. We also work specifically with those athletes who have been injured and are trying to regain the confidence and mental composure to return to optimum performance.

WHAT WE DO

Several areas of focus include:

  • attention/focus control
  • confidence building
  • energy management
  • imagery
  • mental skills training
  • and goal setting

The lab has cutting edge technology which includes:

  • VO2 testing - assesses peak heart rate zones for optimum performance
  • Resting Metabolic Rate testing - measures calorie expenditure at rest and during sports performance
  • neurofeedback - monitoring and training of peak performance brain wave activity
  • Heart Rate Variability - measure of heart rate variability and training of heart rate coherence during performance

We also provide education in advanced sports nutrition for enhanced performance.

WHO CAN BENEFIT

Several examples of athletes who can benefit from our services include:

  • a golfer who is looking to determine optimum mental state prior for a swing or putt
  • a basketball player looking to improve free throw percentages
  • a baseball pitcher looking to increase strike percentages
  • a swimmer looking to better understand the best mental state prior to a swim event
  • a tennis player who wants to improve the percentage of serves landing in bounds

These are just a few examples of how our training program can aid athletes in performance, and any athlete regardless of sport can benefit from mental skills training.  Many parents of children who are trying to improve performance in order to increase the likelihood of athletic scholarships to college are often very interested in these types of services as well.

Another population who can benefit from these services are those looking to improve performance in testing situations. In today’s world, we are required to take a number of tests and many people struggle with anxiety / distraction prior to or during testing which negatively influences performance.

Our program is well designed to reduce the mental interference that negatively influences ones ability to perform at the optimum level in testing situations. We are able to simulate a mock testing environment while measuring indicators of anxiety (specific brain wave activity, heart rate variability, galvanic skin response) and then train the individual to control/inhibit these sympathetic nervous system responses. This training not only reduces distraction from anxiety or fear, but also increases focus as well. The program is excellent for children who struggle with the CRCT, adolescents trying to improve SAT scores, college students taking the MCAT, LSAT, or GRE, and/or adults who struggle in testing, evaluative, or performance situations.

THE PEAK PERFORMANCE MODEL

The Peak Performance Lab is modeled after military programs designed to increase peak performance in Special Forces soldiers and fighter pilots.  We utilize the same technology found within these programs, including the Peak Achievement Trainer.  The Peak Achievement Trainer is cutting edge technology that allows for monitoring of brain wave activity while an individual is engaged in his/her particular sport or performance activity.  This enables us to train an individual to utilize optimal brain wave patterns to increase performance.  We are also able to videotape performance while watching brain wave activity to illustrate to the individual how to use specific brain wave patterns during various phases of performance to improve outcome.

Our services are available to children, adolescents, and adults.
