TREATMENT DIVISION

The treatment division of The Scott Center offers psychological therapy services to those suffering from adjustment problems or more serious psychological problems, with a specialty in mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders. Our therapy services are grounded in an integrative behavioral healthcare model, which consists not only of psychological therapy, but also uses exercise, nutrition, and other holistic interventions as part of a comprehensive treatment package.

ANXIETY & DEPRESSION MANAGEMENT

The Scott Center offers a holistic and behaviorally based treatment program for anxiety and depression. The program uses integrative behavioral medication interventions that have been scientifically proven to reduce depression and anxiety.

We focus specifically upon changes in behavior that will enhance biochemical, psychological, and emotional health. Specific interventions include cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, exercise intervention, nutritional consultation, relaxation training, and psychological mindfulness.

Patients in the program are offered a comprehensive initial assessment which serves as the foundation of the treatment process. In this evaluation, the anxiety/depression issue is addressed in terms of type, intensity, and specific symptom presentation. Biochemical factors such as imbalances in various neurotransmitters in the brain (Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine) are also considered.

A comprehensive fitness assessment and body composition are also completed in order to obtain a baseline measure of fitness, and as a means of prescribing the most precise exercise prescription. This includes obtaining a measure of basal metabolic rate and VO2 level.

All patients work with a Nutritionist in learning to make the best food choices for mood improvement and overall health. Not only is general healthy eating a central focus, but specific changes in eating habits proven to enhance mood and reduce depression and anxiety symptoms are also addressed.

Patients also receive a precise and comprehensive exercise prescription that is developed and implemented in our in-house exercise laboratory. The focus is on finding the right exercise activity that suits your needs, but also which will create the greatest improvement in symptom reduction. Patients are given detailed instruction in the frequency, intensity, and duration of exercise. In addition, behavioral modification techniques are utilized to aid in integration and adherence to the exercise program.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, relaxation training, and psychological mindfulness are also important therapy interventions incorporated as a key part of the program.

Patients participating in this integrative approach find improvements not only in mood, but will also leave the treatment program with a reduction in weight, improved cardiovascular fitness, increased sense of control over their own treatment, and a change in behavior that reduces the risk of further behaviorally based medical illness.

Our program is sixteen weeks in length and requires weekly sessions. Unlike antidepressant medication, this treatment program involves an active approach and includes the patient as a partner in the healing process.

WEIGHT REDUCTION & MANAGEMENT (CHILDREN AND ADULTS)

The Scott Center offers a comprehensive program to address issues of obesity and weight management. This program offers a focus on health rather than a focus on weight. In other words, through the integration of a healthy lifestyle, patients find weight reduction to be a natural consequence of the process. We are not a diet program, nor do we depend upon various food restrictions or unnatural eating patterns. We do not use medications, supplements, or other “short-term” weight loss gimmicks.

Treatment interventions include education about proper nutrition, education about breaking cycles of dysfunctional eating patterns, integrating regular exercise as a life-long behavior, and attention to the emotional and behavioral issues that block patients from losing weight. Our goal is to aid patients in making lifestyle changes that will lead to long-term weight loss and increases in overall health.

Patients will work with a comprehensive team that includes a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Nutritionist. Team members share a common view of holistic and integrative medicine as the most effective way to lose weight and keep weight managed for a lifetime.

Our adult intervention involves individual sessions, whereas our intervention with children is offered individually and in groups. For children in the program, their parents are required to participate as well, and will be actively engaged in an educational process that enables them to help their children be successful.

How does it work?

The program has several key components. Individuals begin the program with a complete assessment that includes body composition, metabolic testing (VO2 and Resting Metabolic Rate), nutritional analysis, and psychological evaluation. This data is reviewed with you and a comprehensive plan is created which involves consultation with a nutritionist, supervised exercise with an exercise psychologist/therapist, and individual monitoring. Psychological skills training and behavior modification is included depending upon the issues influencing poor behavioral choices and/or motivational problems. There is no guesswork involved, as we guide you through the program and offer consistent support and encouragement along the way.

The ultimate goal of our program is not only for you to lose weight, but to keep the weight off through the development of a permanent lifestyle change.

EATING DISORDERS

The Scott Center offers intervention to address disordered eating patterns. Issues related to overeating and food restriction are addressed. The program offers a two pronged approach that includes a focus on psychological therapy and behavioral change. Psychological treatment includes cognitive-behavioral therapy, relaxation training, and psychological mindfulness.

In addition, a central focus is on the eating cycle and how it is influenced by biochemical, environmental, social, psychological, and behavioral factors. The behavioral change process includes behavior modification techniques that teach patients how to make changes in behavior and maintain those changes throughout the lifespan
